Hello everyone, welcome to AMV roundup number Eight!

This will be another post where my comments are fairly brief as I’ve been busy working on other things, but I did want to get this out to finish off this series for the year. I can hardly believe I’ve now completed 9 of these roundup posts (including the Fathers Day one), with 10 videos in each, making for a whopping 90 videos throughout 2023! I hope you all have enjoyed reading these and have hopefully found some new videos to watch. I will not be posting a roundup next month as I have plans to post my top AMVs of 2023 at the beginning of January, which will no doubt be more than enough AMVs for everyone for a while.

Here are the final 10 videos for you this year!

New for 2023

Video title: Cowboy Bebop at His Computer

Editor: cagayakegirlz

Anime: Cowboy Bebop

Song & Artist: Multiple Computer Mark - 1 Trait Danger

Comments: I don’t know how obvious it is, but when making these roundup posts, I’ve been trying to avoid listing videos by the same editors as much as possible - this is to try to keep these posts diverse and hopefully enable people to discover new editors. Sometimes though, I gotta revisit editors. Especially when they post a video as fun as “Cowboy Bebop at His Computer” and hardly anyone is watching it.

VPR: Motion, flickering, fades to white, fades to black

Video title: Ha Ha

Editor: VAERYN

Anime: March Comes In Like a Lion

Song & Artist: Ha Ha - Emiliana Torrini

Comments: I’m fascinated with the way VAERYN has edited “Ha Ha” - there’s a lot going on in this video, but most notably is the playing around with black bars and wipes. I feel they’ve mastered the art of using them to craft suspense and add nuance to some of these scenes.

VPR: Major peripherals, flickering, particles, flashes to black, flashes to white, quick cuts

Video title: This Charming Man

Editor: Extraterrestrial Elephant

Anime: Revolutionary Girl Utena

Song & Artist: This Charming Man - The Smiths

Comments: Extraterrestrial Elephant is a bit of a familiar face, but I couldn’t resist sharing “This Charming Man” as it’s just so unusual. Something about the chosen aesthetic combined with the very literal interpretation of the lyrics makes this video very charming (hah!). Every time the line “I haven’t got a stitch to wear” comes up is just gold.

VPR: Constant purple peripheral box, film grain, motion, flashes to black, flashes to white, red emphasis scenes

Video title: 君といる時

Editor: Sagar Amrania

Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion

Song & Artist: TENGOKU - BENXNI

Comments: This is one of those videos where the music genre would normally put me off, but Sagar Amrania has just made this all work so perfectly I enjoy it regardless. It’s a fairly slick Evangelion production with some rather unique sync choices - Sagar Amrania does some especially cool things with aspect ratios which are rather inspiring (they should team up with VAERYN and combine powers for the ultimate aspect ratio/black bar AMV).

VPR: All (major flashing)

CW: Violence

Video title: SUPERSONIC

Editor: fatu

Anime: Cyber City Oedo 808

Song & Artist: Supersonic - Skrillex, josh pan, Dylan Brady, Noisia

Comments: I would like to be unbiased, but I have to admit I’m a little bit influenced by another amazing video using this song, so I’m not completely able to fully appreciate “SUPERSONIC” (my brain is hardwired to the other video, so I keep expecting to see completely different types of sync). However it is an excellent AMV in its own right, and fatu has combined these sources excellently, so hopefully someone reading will enjoy its full potential.

VPR: All (major flashing)

CW: Violence, gore

Video title: City of Stars

Editor: DarkFlameMaster KT

Anime: Cowboy Bebop

Song & Artist: City of Stars (cover) - 王OK

Comments: “City of Stars” is a rather slow and moody video using a rather lovely cover of City of Stars. DarkFlameMaster KT has captured the laid back melancholy of Cowboy Bebop’s more serious story aspects very well.

VPR: Flashes to white, minor motion

CW: Violence

Video title: Let the Old Ways Die

Editor: Evan DuPell

Anime: Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

Song & Artist: Let the Old Ways Die

Comments: Evan DuPell is a music creator who also makes AMVs for his own songs - all of which are pretty awesome honestly. “Let the Old Ways Die” is the first of his videos I came across and uses Vampire Hunter D to great effect.

VPR: Motion, major red emphasis scenes, fades to black, major flashes to white

CW: Violence, gore

Older videos

Videos which premiered before 2023 that I’ve only recently found and have been enjoying.

Video title: 5 Beats Per Second

Editor: The King Maker

Anime: 5 cm Per Second

Song & Artist: Only the Young - Brandon Flowers

Comments: I’ve had this song in the back of my mind as something I kinda enjoy and might want to edit with one day - well no longer! “5 Beats Per Second” is possibly the perfect AMV for this song for me. Something about the gentle pace The King Maker sets the scene with here, really gets to me on an authentic emotional level (which is hard to do when I’ve been so over saturated with 5 cm Per Second AMVs).

VPR: Flickering, fades to white, fades to black

Video title: oh no

Editor: ori

Anime: Katanagatari

Song & Artist: Oh No! - Marina and The Diamonds

Comments: “oh no” is a super fun character profile video for Nanami from Katanagatari, which is not something I’ve come across before. I’m also very glad YouTube recommended this AMV to me as all of ori’s videos are excellent.

VPR: Flickering, film grain effects, motion, flashes to white, peripherals, fire

CW: Violence

Video title: HUMANS ARE SUCH EASY PREY

Editor: The Sleepy Elf

Anime: Devilman Crybaby

Song & Artist: Humans Are Such Easy Prey - Perturbator

Comments: I feel like “HUMANS ARE SUCH EASY PREY” uses all of the clips from Devilman Crybaby that no one else uses because of the extreme content. I swear I’ve never seen more than half of these scenes before. It’s all overly awful and grotesque, however that’s kind of the point, and The Sleepy Elf has done an excellent job matching these scenes with the music creating a rather dark video.

VPR: All

CW: Major violence and gore, nudity
