Hello everyone, welcome to AMV roundup number four!

AMV roundup is where I’m highlighting any new AMVs I’ve come across in the past month, as well as showcasing any older videos I may find that I’d never encountered before.
The videos featured here are mostly AMVs that aren’t already well known in the AMV community spaces I’m familiar with (unless I particularly want to gush about them for some reason). So hopefully a lot of these videos will be new to anyone reading.

Here are another 10 videos for you this month, I hope you find something to enjoy!

New for 2023

Video title: in memoriam

Editor: 平成

Anime: Violet Evergarden

Song & Artist: Good Days - SZA

Comments: Sometimes I go to the amv.org forum front page and I scroll down to the bottom and look through the names of the editors who are listed as having a birthday that day. I mostly do this as a way of catching sight of editor names who I’d known previously but may have forgotten about. Occasionally if a name I don’t know catches my eye I’ll check out their profile and see if they’ve edited anything interesting. Is this weird of me? Probably yeah, but it’s as good a way of finding new AMVs as any. That’s what happened here - I saw this editor's name, clicked on it, and found they had recently created an AMV.

I normally also look through the list of recently added videos on the org, but for whatever reason this one must have passed me by whenever it was released (it’s entirely possible I glazed over it initially simply because it uses Violet Evergarden).

Anyway, I suspect that “in memoriam” is a highly personal AMV, it’s also somewhat unusual - SZA and Violet Evergarden is not a combination I could ever have imagined before, though 平成 has made something incredibly beautiful and poignant here. I adore the way 平成 has edited this in 480p resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio - forget all your fancy VHS overlays, this is authentic nostalgia, hearkening back to the early days of internet videos. You heard it here kids, you don’t need any fancy effects to completely ruin a millennials emotional state, all you gotta do is make the video low quality and square.

VPR: Flashes to black, flashes to white

Video title: Trapped in the Past

Editor: Takumii

Anime: Various

Song & Artist: Trapped in the Past - TUYU

Comments: Bizarrely, even though I dislike text in AMVs, videos which fully caption the lyrics are fine for me - especially if they are of the literal interpretation of the lyrics type videos, which “Trapped in the Past” happens to be. There’s something wonderfully earnest and endearing about this kind of editing which I can’t help but love.

VPR: Motion, glitching effects, natural strobe (light through train windows), fades to black, fades to white

CW: Gore

Video title: State of my head

Editor: Shark Tooth Goosie

Anime: Various

Song & Artist: State of My Head - Shinedown

Comments: I don’t quite understand how Shark Tooth Goosie makes videos this badass and yet hardly anyone ever seems to watch them - so I am absolutely gonna shill them even though I know they’re well known in a few AMV spaces.

VPR: Fades to black, flashes to white, flashes to black, motion, red emphasis scenes,

CW: Gore, violence

Video title: Throughout Heaven and Earth

Editor: Atlus

Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen

Song & Artist: 一緒なら - 照井順政

Comments: As far as I’m aware “Throughout Heaven and Earth” uses both footage and music from JJK season 2. New shiny anime combined with music from said anime is a fairly tried and tested AMV formula, and more often than not these types of videos don’t interest me… Except the song used is a classical piano piece, and even though I suspect I’ll be seeing all of these clips more than I’ll ever want to in AMV’s over the next few months, Atlus has put together something absolutely stunning here. I dunno, there’s just something about piano music and pretty pictures which just does it for me.

VPR: All

CW: Gore, violence

Video title: Concrete Jungle

Editor: FoxJonesAMV

Anime: Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Song & Artist: Jungle Bill - Yello

Comments: Somehow I missed seeing “Concrete Jungle” when it was first released back in March - YouTube randomly recommended it to me, and I’m very glad it did. “Concrete Jungle” is one of the most unusual uses of Edgerunners I’ve seen so far, Yello makes some weird music and wow does FoxJones combine these excellently. There’s so much fun internal sync in this video taking advantage of all the strange noises in the song - when I grow up I wanna edit AMVs like this.

VPR: All

CW: Gore, violence

Video title: On the Gray

Editor: Kade Smash

Anime: El Cazador De La Brujah

Song & Artist: Kiss From a Rose - No Resolve

Comments: YouTube suggested to me a random clip from this anime, I’d never heard of it before so I was like, “huh, unheard of anime eh? Let's check it out” - So of course what I do is look for AMVs that use it. The very first result I get is not only an AMV that was made this year, but it’s also completely awesome. Kade Smash has sold me on whoever these two are and whatever romance may exist between them - they’re adorable.

VPR: Flashes to white, flickering, fades to black, flashes to black, red/fire

Video title: Cowboy Bebop AMV

Editor: Akio110

Anime: Cowboy bebop

Song & Artist: OKINAWAMINYOU "YAKA-BUSHI" NEO - ELECTRONICOS FANTASTICOS

Comments: This is probably one of the most unique music choices I’ve ever come across in all my years of watching AMVs. I feel like this video is going to be similar to marmite - you’ll either love it or hate it. I love it, the music has a somewhat meditative quality, however I can easily see it being hard to listen to for other people (even though it’s a completely different instrument, some of the tones remind me of bagpipes).

Akio110 has combined these unusual sounds simply with scenes of outer space and starships from Cowboy Bebop, which results in the video having a somewhat ethereal quality.

VPR: Motion/patterns, flickering, flashes to white, peripherals

Older videos

Videos which premiered before 2023 that I’ve only recently found and have been enjoying.

Video title: Boom Clap

Editor: 1Pheeby1

Anime: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro

Song & Artist: Boom Clap - Charli XCX

Comments: This is another anime where YouTube recommended something to me and then I had to go and check out all the AMVs for it. “Boom Clap” ended up being my favourite of all the ones I watched - 1Pheeby1 does a wonderful job of showcasing the dynamic between these characters.

VPR: Motion, red emphasis scenes, flashes to white, flickering, peripherals

Video title: What Makes You Beautiful

Editor: Christopher Kay

Anime: Various

Song & Artist: What Makes You Beautiful - One Direction

Comments: “What Makes You Beautiful” is just pure fun - I get so much joy from watching this and you can tell the editor also had a blast making this.

Christopher Kay additionally has the most amazing channel description - would recommend reading.

VPR: All

Video title: Fly on the Wings of Love

Editor: ccsakuralover1

Anime: Cardcaptor Sakura

Song & Artist: Fly on the Wings of Love - XTM

Comments: This is probably one of those videos no one but me is going to enjoy in this day and age. CCS is an old favourite of mine, and I loved this song when I was like, 13. So yeah, I have major nostalgia for all the things here.

I also love how the AMV is nothing but clips of Sakura flying or doing happy Sakura things - ccsakuralover1 absolutely committed to the theme.

VPR: Motion/particles, flickering, flashes to white
