AMV Roundup 03 - July 2023
Jul. 22nd, 2023 09:18 pmHello everyone, welcome to AMV roundup number three!
AMV roundup is where I’m highlighting any new AMV’s I’ve come across in the past month, as well as showcasing any older videos I may find that I’d never encountered before.
The videos featured here are mostly AMV’s that aren’t already well known in the AMV community spaces I’m familiar with (unless I particularly want to gush about them for some reason). So hopefully a lot of these videos will be new to anyone reading.
Last month was the Father’s Day special, so I’m a little bit behind on my normal schedule, but I do have yet another 10 videos for you this month. It seems like that number is going to become the norm.
I hope you find something to enjoy!
New for 2023
Video title: Moneko
Editor: Call Me Crazy \AMV\
Anime: Bubble
Song & Artist: Moneko - Geoxor
Comments: There’s a lot going on in “Moneko” that I don’t typically enjoy in AMV’s, however Call Me Crazy has put this video together with an amount of grace and precision which I don’t often see accompanying videos with these elements that I can’t help but admire. This type of music has been proven to work extremely well with Bubble and Call me Crazy takes advantage of this with an abundance of different types of sync and editing techniques, with my favourite being the amount of clever little moments of internal sync hidden among everything else.
VPR: Major motion, major flickering, flashes to white, zoom transitions, glitching
Video title: Sun is in the Sky
Editor: MaxWEEBle
Anime: Gunbuster
Song & Artist: LDN - Lily Allen
Comments: Hearing Lily Allen paired with anime is a bit of a novelty for me - this is only the second time I’ve come across it (maybe I should start actually searching for Lily Allen AMVs?). There’s something off about the way MaxWEEBle is editing here, and I absolutely love it. I don’t quite know what the effect overlay is, but it makes the whole thing ever so slightly sinister which plays against the music wonderfully.
VPR: Flashes to white, high contrast, VHS effects
Video title: Bad to the Bone
Editor: sasaina-san
Anime: Naruto
Song & Artist: Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Comments: I’m going to admit that my enjoyment of this video is biased by the fact I’ve been reading almost exclusively Naruto fanfiction since the beginning of 2023 - yes I have a problem.
“Bad to the Bone” is one giant meme and also an ode to the character of Uchiha Sasuke, and sasaina-san is a beautiful human being for creating this.
VPR: Quick cuts, strobing, flashes to black, red emphasis scenes, flickering, motion, flashes to white
Video title: find your way
Editor: SoccerRunnerAMV
Anime: My Hero Academia
Song & Artist: find your way - San Holo
Comments: Most of my MHA knowledge comes from fanfiction and other AMVs, so I don’t have much of a solid grasp on who all these characters are or what is happening in this video. That being said, I find the way SoccerRunner has edited “find your way” to be highly emotionally resonant. It's a beautiful AMV with some profound moments even if I don’t understand the nuance.
VPR: Motion & patterns, peripherals, flashes to white, flickering
Video title: Reptilians
Editor: Unconventional AMV
Anime: Dorohedoro
Song & Artist: Reptilians (Chee Remix) - Noisia, Mefjus & Hybris
Comments: I don’t completely vibe with this AMV, but I do find it fascinating. Unconventional AMV is living up to their name here, making something dark, edgy and slightly unusual.
VPR: Fades to black, major flashes to black, strobing, red emphasis scenes, flashes to white
CW: Violence, gore
Video title: Danny (Deku) Don't you Know
Editor: GoldnJeans11
Anime: My Hero Academia
Song & Artist: Danny Don’t you know - Ninja Sex Party
Comments: Yes, somehow I have two MHA videos in the list this month, even though I haven’t watched MHA.
GoldnJeans11 has recently re-uploaded this AMV so this version has gone under the radar somewhat, and it absolutely deserves more views. This is the type of video I would assume to be an audience favourite at any major convention competition should it be entered. The combination of Deku playing the character of Danny in the song is absolute gold.
VPR: Flashes to white, fades to black, flashes to black, peripherals, flickering
Video title: Green Comeback
Editor: Animetrash AMVs
Anime: Origin: Spirits of the Past
Song & Artist: Back Around - half-alive
Comments: Anyone who’s gone through my end of year top AMV lists will probably be sick of me recommending Animetrash’s videos but heck, I love them and I couldn’t resist sharing this one!
As with a lot of Animetrash’s work, this one took a few viewings to penetrate my psyche. I don’t see very many AMVs with Origin these days, and I could enjoy it on that alone, but as usual Animetrash woos me with all the little bits of internal sync peppered throughout their regular frenetic editing. There’s also something about the mood of this one I really enjoy, it’s a mixture of cute and heartening and it makes me happy when I watch it.
VPR: Major motion, flashes to white, flickering, flashes to black, red emphasis scenes
Older videos
Videos which premiered before 2023 that I’ve only recently found and have been enjoying.
Video title: Discoloration
Editor: Ridiculum Videos
Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Song & Artist: Discoloration - Dawn Golden
Comments: I found “Discoloration” while searching for potential Father’s Day AMVs, this didn’t quite fit what I was after, but it sure is an interesting video. There are elements here which come across initially as potential editing mistakes, however there are also moments which are so assuredly deliberate that I can’t help but feel that despite how things may appear, Ridiculum has done everything for a reason regardless of how against normal editing etiquette they may be. I find the mood created is quite unconventional.
VPR: Flashes to black, flashes to white, motion, red emphasis scenes, quick cuts
CW: Gore
Video title: karekano amv
Editor: baby nut
Anime: Kare Kano
Song & Artist: Menelec - Squarepusher
Comments: I feel like this video is as if baby nut set out to make an experimental Evangelion AMV and then decided to use Kare Kano instead.
I honestly don’t know what else to say about this. It’s a wild ride and impeccably edited.
VPR: Major All
Video title: Anime Dance Techno Rave Party
Editor: emokunoichi1
Anime: Various
Song & Artist: 20 Years Later - U.S. Test
Comments: I love finding older videos like these, and with a title like “Anime Dance Techno Rave Party” you know you’re in for a good time.
The footage seems to be mostly comprised of gifs and visualisations, but my goodness the amount of effort put into this by emokunoichi1 is staggering. The sheer will to wrangle what must have been such a limited amount of resource into something this engaging still to this day is inspiring. There’s also a monumental amount of fun to be found here, the moment at 02:49 where the video just starts coming at you is glorious every time.
Tangent - wth is with this song? I know it was a thing for edm songs to incorporate serious quotes in them a while back, but this song is such a mystery. The artist only made this one song (and remixes of it), I can find barely anything about it, or what on earth the quote is about. Annoyingly searching for the words brings up a bunch of stuff about 9/11 which it’s obviously not referencing since the song is from 2006.
